The United States has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting peace efforts in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), emphasizing its support for regional mediation initiatives and highlighting recent actions taken to address the conflict.
During a press conference on March 6th, State Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce reiterated the U.S. government’s dedication to resolving the conflict in the DRC. She highlighted the importance of the Angola-led mediation process and emphasized the need for an immediate ceasefire and accountability for human rights violations.
“We firmly stand with the Congolese people and support the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the DRC,” stated Ms. Bruce. She underscored the U.S. commitment to regional peace initiatives and mentioned that Secretary of State Marco Rubio had stressed the urgency of a ceasefire and accountability during discussions with the Angolan and Congolese presidents.
Ms. Bruce urged Congolese and Rwandan leaders to actively participate in the Angola-led Luanda process and the Nairobi process to achieve a lasting resolution to the conflict. She emphasized the continued U.S. diplomatic engagement in the peace process.
The spokesperson also highlighted the Trump administration’s imposition of sanctions on individuals involved in the violence, underscoring the U.S. commitment to holding those responsible for the conflict accountable.
