At least sixteen pupils at a boarding school in Gilgil, about 120km north-west of Nairobi have been confirmed to have died in an inferno.
According to the authorities, scores of pupils of the Utumishi Girls Acadey were hospitalised for their injuries following the blaze which began in a dormitory of the school and got out of control early on Thursday.
The dormitory has been completely gutted.
Parents and guardians of the pupils have stormed the scene demanding information about those who could not be immediately accounted for.
Education Minister Julius Ogamba visited the scene and told reporters that the cause of the fire has not been determined.
While visiting the scene Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen urged patience as investigations got under way to determine the cause of the blaze and details about those who perished in it.
