As part of the ongoing “African Lion 2025” exercise, a joint Moroccan-American military field hospital in Anzi, Tiznit Province, has provided over 44,000 medical treatments to 12,480 patients. This extensive humanitarian effort highlights the crucial non-military dimension of the cooperation between Morocco and the United States.
Extensive medical services provided
The temporary facility, deployed from May 5 to 23, underscores the broad scope of military cooperation between the two nations, extending beyond traditional military drills to include vital humanitarian aid. Staffed by 271 Moroccan and American healthcare professionals, the hospital offered a wide array of services. It included fully equipped medical and surgical units, a 20-bed inpatient unit with expandable capacity, a digital imaging center, a laboratory, a military pharmacy, as well as dedicated dental and social assistance services.
Medical specialties covered a comprehensive range, including Cardiology, Gynecology, Pediatrics, Dermatology, Pulmonology, ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat), Ophthalmology, Internal medicine, and General and orthopedic surgery.
During its operational period, the hospital successfully performed 380 surgical procedures, issued 9,068 prescriptions, and distributed 4,268 pairs of eyeglasses free of charge.
High-level delegation visit
On Wednesday, a high-level joint delegation visited the site to observe the humanitarian efforts firsthand. The delegation was led by Lieutenant General Mohamed Benlouali, Chief of Staff of the Southern Zone for the Moroccan Royal Armed Forces, and General Andrew Gainey, Commander of the U.S. Armed Forces Southern European Task Force (SETAF-AF). Their visit underscored the commitment of both countries to the humanitarian aspects of the “African Lion 2025” exercise.
