With less than two weeks to go before the football World Cup kicks off in the United States, Canada,
and Mexico, several African national teams are involved in a series of friendlies to fine-tune their preparations ahead of their tournament openers.
Cape Verde played its first warm-up match for the 2026 World Cup on Sunday against Serbia which the Blue Sharks won 3-0 thanks to goals from Kevin Pina, Laros Duarte, and Gilson Benchimol.
This match was part of the Cape Verdean national team’s preparation for its World Cup tournament debut.
Defendig African champions Senegal continued their preparations with a match against the United States in Charlotte, North Carolina on Sunday.
The Lions lost 3-2, despite a brace from talisman Sadio Mané. Pape Thiaw’s squad will play a final friendly against Saudi Arabia in San Antonio, Texas on June 9th, before kicking off their World Cup campaign against France seven days later.
Morocco began its preparations for the World Cup with a 5-0 thumping of Burundi in a match played on May 26.
The Atlas Lions face Madagascar in another warm-up on June 2 at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex in Rabat, before facing Norway on June 7 in the United States as part of their final friendly before the World Cup.
Egypt edged Russia 1-0 victory in Cairo on May 28 with Mostafa Zizo scoring the game’s only goal.
The Pharaohs will continue their preparations against Brazil in Cleveland on June 6th.
Africa’s representatives are the World Cup are South Africa, Algeria, Cape Verde, Ivory Coast, Egypt, Ghana, Morocco, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Senegal, and Tunisia.
