Kenya’s Geoffrey Toroitich Kipchumba won the Amsterdam Marathon in 2 hours 03 minutes 30 seconds, breaking the course record, while Ethiopian Aynalem Desta won the women’s race with a time of 2 hours 17 minutes 37 seconds.
The TCS Amsterdam Marathon celebrated a new star this Sunday. Geoffrey Toroitich Kipchumba, competing in only his second race over the legendary 42.195 km distance, triumphed in 2 hours 03 minutes 30 seconds, beating the previous course record, held since 2019 by Tamirat Tola, by nine seconds.
Starting cautiously in a pack led by favorites Tsegay Getachew and Joshua Cheptegei, Toroitich accelerated after the 30th km, taking advantage of a sustained pace (1 hour 28 minutes 22 seconds per 30 km).
With three kilometers to go, he distanced his last rival, Getaneh Molla of Ethiopia, to achieve the victory in the Olympic Stadium in Amsterdam.
Getachew (2:04:18) and Molla (2:04:19) completed the podium, while Cheptegei, a two-time Olympic track champion, finished fifth with a new personal best (2:04:52).
In the women’s race, Aynalem Desta claimed a resounding victory in 2 hours 17 minutes 37 seconds, improving her personal best by more than four minutes and setting the third-fastest time in the history of the event. She finished ahead of her compatriot Bertukan Welde (2:17:56) and Mekides Shimeles (2:19:56), in an all-Ethiopian hat-trick on Sunday, October 19.
With top-level performances in both categories, this 2025 edition of the Amsterdam Marathon confirms its place among the fastest races on the world calendar.
