The Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO) has issued a public warning urging citizens across the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU/UEMOA) to remain vigilant regarding misleading information circulating on social media about counterfeit banknotes and authentication methods.
In an official statement, the central bank cautioned that several online posts promote unofficial verification techniques based on inappropriate features that have not been validated by its services. The institution warned that relying on unverified testing methods risks confusing the public, which could lead to accepting counterfeit currency or mistakenly rejecting genuine banknotes.
To maintain financial security and preserve public trust in the regional currency, the BCEAO advised the public to rely exclusively on official guidance published on its main online portal, specifically referencing its dedicated banknotes and coins resource section. The central bank emphasized that it retains the legal right to prosecute individuals or organizations distributing deceptive communications that threaten to undermine confidence in the monetary system governing the West African Monetary Union.
