Benin is advancing its public health infrastructure with the construction of a high-tech national laboratory in Abomey-Calavi, specifically designed to monitor the quality of water and health products.
Developed in partnership with the World Bank, this facility is a cornerstone of the government’s strategy to improve national hygiene standards and aggressively target counterfeit goods. A high-level delegation, including presidential adviser Noëlle Sadelèr and ANCQ Director General Dr. Achille Yemoa, inspected the site on April 17, 2026, to verify that the complex infrastructure—which spans two levels and includes 80 specialized rooms—meets strict international construction and safety standards.
The new laboratory will be managed by the National Agency for Quality Control of Health Products and Water (ANCQ) and is equipped with advanced technology to conduct precise microbiological and physico-chemical analyses. By centralizing these diagnostic capabilities, the facility will provide the reliability needed to certify the safety of drinking water and pharmaceuticals nationwide. Once the transition to operational status is complete, the laboratory is expected to serve as a vital defensive shield for Beninese consumers, ensuring that both essential medicines and water supplies remain free from contamination and fraud.
