Botswana’s Assistant Minister for State President, Maipelo Mophuting, has been elected to the Bureau of Women Parliamentarians at the ongoing 150th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
The election, held on Tuesday, replaces representatives whose terms ended in March.
The Bureau of Women Parliamentarians plays a crucial role in ensuring that issues affecting women remain central to the IPU’s priorities.
Among other things, it organises the work of the Forum of Women Parliamentarians, which convenes twice annually during the IPU Assembly in April and October.
The bureau also promotes gender awareness within the IPU by developing sustained programmes on women’s issues and encouraging greater participation of members of parliament in senior roles.
