The Burkinabe government has approved the creation of a Higher Military Training College, as announced following a Council of Ministers meeting held on Wednesday, May 14, 2025.
The decision to establish this advanced military education institution falls under the purview of the Ministry of Defense and Veterans Affairs.
According to the Minister of State for Defense, General Celestin Simpore, the new college will serve several key objectives. These include: “locally training a military elite with advanced skills in strategy, command, crisis management, and geopolitics; adapting educational curricula to the specific national and sub-regional security challenges; and bolstering the country’s sovereignty in the realm of high-level military training.”
General Simpore further stated that the college will also “enable the development of sub-regional and regional cooperation by welcoming officers from neighboring and other African countries, thereby contributing to collective stability.” He emphasized that the establishment of this higher military education college is a crucial component of a broader effort to strengthen national resilience in the face of diverse threats and to ensure the sustainable professionalization of the Burkinabe Armed Forces.
This initiative is part of a series of reforms undertaken within the Burkinabe army aimed at enhancing its capacity to effectively address the persistent security challenges that the country has been grappling with for several years.
