The Burkinabe Ministry of Security has officially initiated a nationwide operation titled “WIBGA-2,” a strategic initiative designed to heighten citizen vigilance and fortify internal security against persistent regional threats.
In a formal statement released on April 28, Security Minister Mahamadou Sana commended the public’s ongoing commitment to safety monitoring while emphasizing the necessity for even greater mobilization under this new phase. This operation is a central component of the transitional government’s broader framework to counter insecurity and mitigate the impact of insurgent activities throughout the country.
Under the “WIBGA-2” protocol, citizens are encouraged to act as proactive partners by reporting specific suspicious behaviors to the authorities. The Ministry has identified several key indicators for public awareness, ranging from unusual bulk food purchases and the acquisition of materials potentially used for explosives to the sudden occupancy of residences by individuals who intentionally avoid local social contact. Additionally, the operation highlights the importance of monitoring irregularities such as the refusal to comply with hotel registration procedures, suspicious movements near strategic military or administrative infrastructure, and any unauthorized attempts to gather data on sensitive national sites.
Minister Sana underscored that ensuring national stability requires a holistic approach that seamlessly integrates the efforts of defense forces with civilian cooperation. By positioning every citizen as a vital link in the security chain, the government aims to create a more robust community-based vigilance mechanism. This strategy is particularly critical as Burkina Faso continues its efforts to restore territorial integrity and protect its population within the increasingly complex security landscape of the Sahel. The launch of “WIBGA-2” signals a significant tightening of national security measures and a renewed focus on collective defense as a means to contain the spread of armed groups.
