In a plenary session held on Monday, March 23, 2026, at the Paul Biya Palace in Yaoundé, the National Assembly of Cameroon adopted a bill extending the mandate of its members by an additional nine months.
The current term, which had already been extended once and was set to expire on March 31, will now continue until December 20, 2026. Official sources state that this exceptional measure is necessary to ensure that the upcoming legislative elections are held under suitable conditions.
Authorities cited a combination of organizational, logistical, and security constraints as the primary reasons for the delay, noting that these factors make it impossible to conduct the vote within the original timeframe. As of now, a specific new date for the legislative elections has not been announced.
While such extensions have occurred previously in Cameroon to ensure a credible and peaceful process, this latest move comes during a period of heightened political sensitivity.
