The Chadian government has officially removed the National Electricity Company (SNE) from its role as the main operator of the public electricity service and has established a new state-owned utility, to take over operations.
The new company replacing SNE is known as “TchadElec”.
According to a decree issued on 9 July, the government stripped the SNE of its delegated authority to manage public electric power services and rescinded the transfer of state assets necessary for fulfilling its mission.
A state-run entity, the SNE has been facing severe financial crisis since 2012. Despite repeated government subsidies and several restructuring efforts, the company has consistently failed to meet its service obligations.
Power outages have become a daily reality for residents in the capital and other cities across the country.
In response, authorities have created a new company, “TchadElec,” which will be fully owned by the Chadian state.
The government is expected to entrust this new entity with managing the country’s public electricity service.
