The Chadian government has warned against dangerous practices during festive periods in the country and announced strict enforcement of safety regulations, particularly at weddings.
In a joint statement released on Thursday, January 8, 2026, in Chad, the Ministers of Public Security and Immigration, along with those of Justice and Human Rights, issued a strong appeal for strict adherence
to safety regulations at festive events, especially weddings, in order to curb the increase in accidents, some of which are fatal.
The authorities emphasised that, despite the existence of a clear regulatory framework, certain dangerous practices persist and continue to cause tragedies.
The statement specifically cited unsupervised wedding processions, the transport of people in “Amazon” position, the use of firearms for celebratory shooting and the uncontrolled use of fireworks or dangerous games by children.
On the use of firearms during wedding ceremonies, the ministers reiterated that this often-normalized practice had serious consequences in the past with stray bullets causing serious, sometimes fatal, injuries, affecting both guests and bystanders, including women and children.
According to the statement, several celebrations, intended to be joyous occasions had turned into scenes of mourning, fueling concern among authorities and the public.
It added that Article 301 of the Penal Code and the decree of January 8, 2025, strictly regulate the organization of
festive and wedding events.
The ministers noted, however, that these texts remain largely unknown or deliberately ignored by some citizens.
The government has therefore warned that any violation will henceforth be punished in accordance with the applicable regulations and the ministers finally called for collective awareness and increased vigilance, believing that security in public spaces is a shared responsibility and that celebration cannot justify endangering human lives.
