The Coordination of Tournons La Page Guinée has denounced a serious cyanide pollution incident in the Loïla district, Koundian sub-prefecture (Mandiana), reportedly caused by the activities of the Mandiana Mining Company (SMM).
According to the human rights organisation, the cyanide overflow has resulted in the death of several cattle and numerous aquatic animals, as well as contamination of rivers used by local communities.
In a statement released Sunday, Tournons La Page Guinée warned of the risks posed by the “abusive and uncontrolled use of cyanide” to the health and living conditions of villagers in the area.
The organisation, which brings together more than 250 civil society movements across 16 African and European countries, said it conducted consultations with affected communities prior to issuing its declaration.
Tournons La Page Guinée calls on SMM to comply with existing environmental and health standards. The organisation also urged the relevant authorities to halt “community intimidation” and ensure that the mining company implements proper control and monitoring measures to prevent future incidents.
The group accused SMM of violating the fundamental rights of local populations and demanded immediate action to stop operations affecting community well-being.
Villagers called for justice in response to a situation that endangers both their health and their environment.
