Dr. Succes Masra, a prominent Chadian opposition leader, is scheduled to appear before the Indictment Chamber of the Ndjamena High Court on June 19.
He faces charges of incitement to hatred, incitement to rebellion, complicity, and murder. As has been the case since the beginning of his legal proceedings, the trial will be held behind closed doors.
Dr. Masra, who leads the Les Transformateurs movement, was arrested at his home on May 16. He is suspected of involvement in the massacre of approximately 40 Fulani people, allegedly perpetrated by residents of Mandakaou canton in Western Logone on May 14. The accusation reportedly stems from an audio recording posted on social media in May 2023, in which the opposition leader, then in exile, called on people to take up arms in self-defense.
His legal team has vehemently denounced the charges, characterizing them as a political conspiracy aimed at removing him from the political landscape. In response, several opposition parties and civil society organizations are demanding his “immediate” release or, failing that, the presentation of “conclusive evidence” before any trial proceeds.
