Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty has emphasized the necessity of a “purely Sudanese” political process to preserve Sudan’s national institutions while fulfilling the population’s aspirations for safety and stability.
In a telephone conversation on Sunday, August 9, with his Sudanese counterpart, Mohieddin Salem, Abdelatty reiterated Egypt’s steadfast commitment to Sudan’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity.
The foreign ministers examined bilateral relations and explored avenues to broaden strategic cooperation across multiple sectors. According to a statement released by Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, both diplomats agreed to maintain close consultations and coordination to reflect the historic relationship between the two nations and support their mutual interests.
The political outreach occurs against the backdrop of a devastating conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which began in April 2023. The war has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths, displaced millions, and created the world’s largest famine according to the United Nations. Violence has escalated in recent months with increased drone strikes, which killed over 1,000 civilians in the first five months of the year, alongside severe UN warnings regarding potential large-scale atrocities as the RSF advances in El-Obeid and the wider Kordofan region.
