An Eritrean opposition group on Friday launched what is called “the Eritrean Youth Movement for Unity and Justice – Green Revolution Project” in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia.
The new political and revolutionary project aims at rebuilding Eritrean national action on the foundations of justice, equality, and genuine partnership, according to a statement issued by the group.
“The past years have demonstrated that the Eritrean crisis can no longer be resolved through the reproduction of old political tools or the repetition of traditional slogans,” said the statement, noting the urgent need for a new project that possesses a clear vision, political determination, and a genuine capacity for organization, influence, and change.
The group said for decades, the Eritrean people have suffered from authoritarian rule, the closure of political space, the paralysis of institutions, and the absence of justice.
“Large segments of Eritrean society, particularly the Eritrean Muslim community, have also experienced marginalization, exclusion, and the lack of fair representation within state institutions and national decision-making processes,” it said.
According to the group’s statement, the project seeks to unite political, youth, and social energies, and to build an organized body capable of representing the Eritrean Muslim community, defending its rights, and contributing to the creation of a new future for Eritrea.
“We are not calling for division, but rather striving toward achieving national balance and building a fair partnership based on mutual respect and genuine recognition of the rights of all Eritreans,” the statement noted.
The group indicated that the current crisis in Eritrea can no longer be confronted through symbolic positions or general rhetoric alone. It requires a serious project equipped with political, organizational, and grassroots means capable of supporting a genuine path toward national transformation.
“The Green Revolution does not present itself as a temporary voice of protest or a short-lived political phenomenon. Rather, it is a project that seeks to reorganize Eritrea’s political reality on foundations that are more just, more balanced, and better able to represent the Eritrean Muslim community and defend its rights,” the group said.
The group noted that the Green Revolution is a long-term national project that seeks to restore national balance and open a new chapter in Eritrea’s history — a chapter founded upon justice, dignity, national partnership, and faith in the right of our people to a better future.
