The Kingdom of Eswatini reaffirmed its “firm and unwavering support” for the Autonomy Plan proposed by Morocco in 2007 to resolve the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
Eswatini’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Pholile Dlamini Shakantu, made the statement in Laayoune during a visit to her country’s Consulate General, which opened there in October 2020.
The Minister emphasized that the diplomatic presence in Laayoune reflects the strong friendship between the two countries and their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation.
“By coming here, we made a point of visiting our consulate in Laayoune, a symbol of our close ties with Morocco and our commitment to expanding our trade, cultural, and tourism cooperation,” Minister Shakantu said. She encouraged Eswatini’s economic operators to explore the opportunities in Morocco’s southern provinces, noting their “remarkable growth” driven by major infrastructure projects under King Mohammed VI.
The diplomat also highlighted the importance of strengthening South-South cooperation, recognizing Morocco’s key role in continental development.
Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita praised the positive momentum in relations with Eswatini, which is based on the principles of solidarity and co-development. He expressed appreciation for Eswatini’s constructive and consistent position in supporting the Kingdom’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over its entire territory.
