UN Secretary-General António Guterres announced on Monday, April 20, 2026, the appointment of former Egyptian Minister Rania Al-Mashat as the Executive Secretary of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA).
Succeeding Kuwaiti Rola Dashti, Al-Mashat takes the helm of the Beirut-based agency just two months after concluding an eight-year ministerial tenure in Egypt. ESCWA plays a pivotal role in supporting West Asian states through economic analysis and technical assistance, and her leadership comes at a time when the region faces significant macroeconomic imbalances and complex social challenges.
Al-Mashat’s career is defined by over 25 years of high-level experience in macroeconomic policy and development finance. Before her recent appointment, she managed several key portfolios in the Egyptian government, including Tourism, International Cooperation, and Planning and Economic Development. Her foundational expertise was further established during her eleven-year tenure as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Egypt, where she was instrumental in shaping the nation’s monetary policy. This extensive domestic experience is complemented by a strong international background, including two periods at the International Monetary Fund in Washington, D.C., as well as board positions at major institutions such as the World Bank and the African Development Bank.
This appointment further solidifies Egypt’s influential footprint within the United Nations and other multilateral organizations. Al-Mashat joins a prominent group of Egyptian officials currently holding executive roles, including Khaled El-Anany at UNESCO and Mahmoud Mohieldin as the UN Special Envoy for Development Financing. With a PhD in Economics from the University of Maryland and executive training from Harvard and Oxford, Al-Mashat represents the United Nations’ strategic focus on leaders who can bridge the gap between national governance and international diplomatic coordination.
