The arrest and detention of Harold Leckat, director of Gabon Media Time and a journalist known for his critical investigations, have triggered widespread indignation among the Gabonese press and human rights organizations.
Leckat was arrested on October 15, 2025, immediately upon his arrival at Libreville airport. He was subsequently transferred and detained in the capital’s central prison under conditions described by advocates as inhumane.
The journalist is officially accused of embezzlement concerning a commercial contract signed with the Caisse des Dépôts et Consignations (Deposit and Consignment Fund). However, many observers and civil society groups denounce the legal process, asserting that the judicial system is being used to silence a critical voice—a familiar claim, as this marks the second time Leckat has faced such a procedure.
Trade unions and NGOs, including SOS Prisonniers Gabon, have expressed their strong support for Leckat. The human rights defenders are calling for transparent judicial proceedings, respect for the journalist’s fundamental rights, and his immediate release.
