Senegal’s Ministry of Culture, Handicrafts and Tourism tuesday announced the death of award-winning actress Halima Gadji, who passed away on January 26.
“Brought to public attention through iconic roles, Marième Dial was able to portray her characters with sensitivity and commitment, deeply resonating within society and helping to make audiovisual production a space for reflection, dialogue and shared experience,” the ministry said in a statement confirming the actress’s death.
“A leading figure in African television series, she leaves behind a remarkable career and a significant artistic legacy,” the ministry added.
Beyond her artistic achievements, Halima Gadji will be remembered as “a committed and passionate woman, deeply attached to the human and cultural values of her country,” the statement noted.
“Her passing represents an immense loss for the nation, for the artistic community, and for the entire Senegalese people,” it added.
The minister also extended, “on behalf of the President of the Republic, the Government and the Senegalese people,” his “deepest condolences” to the family of the late actress, her loved ones, the artistic community, and all those touched by her work.
