A protest march organised by Côte d’Ivoire’s opposition coalition, comprising the PPA-CI and the PDCI, has been officially authorised and it is now scheduled to take place on August 9, 2025, with a new route.
Initially planned for August 2, 2025, from Marcory to Place de la République in Plateau, the business district of Abidjan, the march was postponed and would now be held in Yopougon, in western Abidjan, from Saguidiba to Place Ficgayo, starting at 8:00 a.m. GMT (local time).
A source close to the PPA-CI–PDCI coalition, which brings together the parties of former President Laurent Gbagbo and former Credit Suisse CEO Tidjane Thiam, confirmed that the march has received the green light from the authorities.
The Prefect of the Abidjan Department had previously cancelled the August 2 demonstration, citing a lack of available security forces, who were largely deployed to Bouaké (in central Côte d’Ivoire) for the 65th Independence Day celebrations.
The PPA-CI and the PDCI, Côte d’Ivoire’s two main opposition parties, say the demonstration is meant to voice their growing frustration with the electoral process and to call for urgent political dialogue to ensure an inclusive presidential election, which is just three months away
Damana Adia Pickass, General Coordinator of the PPA-CI/PDCI Joint Operational Committee and a senior member of Gbagbo’s party, along with other key PPA-CI figures such as Justin Koua and Blaise Lasm, all under judicial supervision, were summoned by the police on Tuesday, August 5, 2025.
