At least 46 people have died in a serious traffic accident involving multiple vehicles in Uganda, according to the police on Wednesday.
There was a devastating scene of mangled vehicle wreckage on the side of the Kampala-Gulu Highway which is one of the most accident-prone roads in the country.
The initial death toll from the crash on the Kampala-Gulu Highway at midnight on Tuesday into Wednesday, was put at 63 but was revised downward after it was discovered that some of the victims had been unconscious and regained consciousness after they were treated.
The Uganda Police Force said the accidet involved two buses that rammed into each other while moving from opposite directions. They were overtaking other vehicles on their lane including a lorry.
In a bid to avoid a head-on collision, one of buses veered off course and set off series of crashes, causing other vehicles to overturn mutiple times.
The police said they are investigating the cause of the accident.
President Yoweri Museveni has sent a message of condolence to the families of those who died in the incident which happened in one of the busiest highways linking Kampala in the south to Gulu in northern Uganda.
He advised users of the road to exercise caution and announced that the bereaved family will be given $1,430 each while the injured will also be compensated.
