A Libyan scientific study has revealed that the H9N2 strain of avian influenza has become endemic in broiler chicken farms located southwest of Tripoli.
The research, jointly conducted by the Libyan Biotechnology Research Center and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Tripoli, highlights the persistent circulation of the virus within the country’s poultry industry.
Researchers analysed 342 blood samples collected from six unvaccinated farms, finding a widespread presence of antibodies against H9N2 — clear evidence of an active and sustained infection among poultry populations.
In response, the study recommends implementing enhanced vaccination programs and stricter veterinary monitoring to mitigate the health and economic risks associated with the virus’s spread.
The findings also show that immune response intensity increases with age, underscoring the need for continuous field surveillance to fine-tune vaccination strategies and deepen understanding of the virus’s dynamics in Libya.
A member of the Influenza A virus group, the H9N2 strain primarily affects birds, though occasional human infections have been reported — typically mild and similar to seasonal influenza.
The World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) are closely monitoring the strain due to its mutation potential and the global health risks it may pose.
