The Malian government and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) are preparing to initiate formal negotiations on a multi-year economic programme supported by an Extended Credit Facility (ECF).
The milestone follows a five-day technical mission to Bamako from October 5 to 9, where IMF representatives met with senior Malian officials across the finance, mining, energy, and trade departments to evaluate the nation’s macroeconomic trajectory, public finances, banking sector stability, and external balances.
The upcoming negotiations mark a significant transition for Mali following the successful completion of its non-financing Staff-Monitored Programme, which guided domestic economic reforms and revenue digitalization efforts. An Extended Credit Facility would unlock concessional financial assistance to stabilize Mali’s economy as it recovers from gold production slumps and fuel supply bottlenecks. Additional technical data exchanges and virtual consultations are slated in the coming weeks to establish structural benchmarks and financial terms before a formal proposal is submitted to the IMF Executive Board.
