Criminal investigators in Guinea-Bissau have arrested a 47-year-old Guinean national late last week, after he escaped from a high-security prison in The Gambia, where he was serving a life sentence.
The Guinea-Bissau Judicial Police (PJ) Friday confirmed the arrest, carried out in Bissau late last week, of the fugitive who Gambian authorities described as a “very dangerous” and wanted internationally.
The man had escaped from Mile 2 Central Prison, a high-security penitentiary located in The Gambia, where he was serving a life sentence for kidnapping and armed robbery.
His escape triggered alerts and active searches in several countries of the West African
sub-region.
The operation, launched following a complaint, was conducted within the framework of international police cooperation, in close coordination with regional criminal intelligence sharing mechanisms.
It resulted in the identification, location, and subsequent neutralisation of the fugitive in Guinea-Bissau.
In a statement, the Judicial Police reaffirmed its determination to ensure that “national territory is not used as a refuge by individuals fleeing justice,” emphasising its commitment to regional police
cooperation and the fight against transnational organised crime.
The fugitive will be handed over to the Gambian authorities in accordance with applicable mutual legal assistance procedures.
