Mauritania has firmly rejected allegations that it serves as a transit hub for weapons from Ukraine bound for armed groups in the Sahel, stressing its commitment to regional stability, according to the Mauritanian News Agency (AMI).
The AMI reported that no tangible evidence has been provided to substantiate the claims. It recalled that Mauritania has, for over a decade, implemented an effective strategy to prevent and combat violent extremism, which has enabled the country to maintain stability despite regional turmoil. The government underscored that its internal security is inseparable from that of its neighbors, and that regional solidarity is both a moral duty and a practical necessity.
According to AMI, Nouakchott has discreetly supported its Sahelian partners through intelligence sharing, logistical assistance, and mediation, favouring action over public communication. This approach, the agency noted, reflects a consistent diplomacy based on multilateralism, respect for the United Nations Charter, and the peaceful settlement of disputes, while steering clear of geopolitical rivalries.
On the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Mauritania backed the UN General Assembly resolution condemning violations of Ukraine’s sovereignty, while opposing Russia’s suspension from the Human Rights Council, arguing that sanctions and isolation do not contribute to resolving crises. AMI stressed that Nouakchott’s diplomatic choices are guided by historical coherence and principled positions, rather than by favors from one side or the other.
Finally, Mauritania maintains an open dialogue with its Sahelian partners, particularly Mali, to prevent instability in the region. AMI concluded that in the face of recent accusations, Nouakchott continues to pursue a “diplomacy of restraint—discreet but firm in its principles”—convinced that Sahel stability is a shared responsibility.
