On Tuesday, July 29, King Mohammed VI of Morocco reaffirmed his commitment to extending an olive branch to Algeria, emphasizing the critical need for frank and responsible dialogue to overcome bilateral differences.
During his address to the Nation on the occasion of the 26th anniversary of his inauguration, the Sovereign reiterated Morocco’s consistent stance in favor of sincere dialogue, characterized by fraternity and mutual respect between the two neighboring peoples.
True to a diplomatic policy he has maintained for several years, the King once again expressed his conviction about the necessity of moving beyond the current state of relations between Rabat and Algiers. This approach is rooted in a vision of Maghreb unity built upon deep historical, cultural, and geographical ties. The speech also reaffirmed Morocco’s aspiration to reopen its borders, which have remained closed since 1994, and to normalize bilateral relations based on trust and mutual interest.
While calling for the strengthening of the Maghreb Union, the Moroccan sovereign underscored the essential involvement of both Morocco and Algeria in any process of regional recovery. According to him, reconciliation between the two countries remains a prerequisite for the emergence of a coherent Maghreb bloc capable of addressing challenges in development, security, and economic integration.
On the Sahara issue, the King highlighted the positive developments in international recognition of the Moroccan autonomy plan, specifically welcoming the support recently expressed by the United Kingdom and Portugal. He emphasized Rabat’s peaceful and consensual approach, which is based on respect for national sovereignty and the pursuit of an equitable solution free from confrontation. By reiterating its principles of dialogue, appeasement, and regional cooperation, Morocco reaffirms its strategy of promoting stability within a geopolitical environment marked by significant uncertainties.
