In a continued effort to bolster good governance and democratic stability across the African continent, Morocco and the African Union Commission (AUC) have launched their fourth joint training session for African election observers in Rabat.
This initiative comes at a crucial time, with numerous elections anticipated in a frequently complex political landscape.
The inauguration of this latest training program, held on Monday in the Moroccan capital, underscores the ongoing cooperation between Rabat and the African Union in strengthening electoral processes throughout Africa, a continent currently navigating a significant period of democratic transitions.
Speaking at the launch, Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita reaffirmed the Kingdom’s unwavering commitment to peace and security in Africa, as well as its dedication to promoting principles of good governance. He emphasized the heightened importance of capacity building for election observers, given the significant number of upcoming elections both on the continent and globally.
Minister Bourita specifically highlighted the program’s aim to strengthen the role of women in election observation, referencing Morocco’s various initiatives at both the national and international levels in this regard.
This session also marks an expansion of the training program, now benefiting a larger cohort of 120 participants drawn from various African nations. Minister Bourita hailed this diversity as a significant asset for fostering continental cooperation in matters of governance.
He further articulated Morocco’s ambition to contribute to equipping the continent with highly qualified election observation professionals who can play an active and meaningful role in promoting regional stability through credible and transparent electoral processes.
Minister Bourita reiterated that this collaborative initiative aligns with the vision of King Mohammed VI to actively promote peace and stability across Africa. Bankole Adeoye, the African Union Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, lauded the Kingdom’s consistent efforts in consolidating this vital program since its inception in 2022. He emphasized that the current challenges facing the continent necessitate enhanced skills and expertise in election observation to effectively contribute to the overall stability of Africa.
