At the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors meeting in Vienna, Morocco has reaffirmed its dedication to South-South cooperation, focusing on enhancing nuclear and radiological safety across the region. Speaking during the session held from March 2 to 6, 2026,
Ambassador Azzeddine Farhane, Morocco’s Permanent Representative, emphasized the Kingdom’s role in strengthening emergency preparedness and response capabilities, particularly in areas where technical needs are most urgent.
While acknowledging that nuclear safety remains a sovereign responsibility, Ambassador Farhane detailed Morocco’s proactive efforts to modernize its own regulatory framework. The Kingdom has updated its national regulations to align strictly with IAEA safety standards and has voluntarily hosted two major review missions to ensure transparency and excellence. Notably, the Emergency Preparedness and Response (EPREV) mission praised Morocco’s robust national system, identifying several “best practices” that exceed standard international expectations.
Morocco’s strategy extends beyond its own borders, as the diplomat reiterated the country’s willingness to share its expertise with other African nations upon request. By collaborating with both regional and international partners, Morocco aims to bolster the global nuclear safety regime and support the IAEA’s broader mission of technical cooperation and security.
As one of the IAEA’s key governing bodies, the 35-member Board of Governors continues to oversee critical programs, budgets, and safety standards. Morocco’s active participation underscores its position as a regional leader in the peaceful and safe application of nuclear technology.
