Morocco has solidified its role as a regional leader in tourism with the official inauguration of the UN Tourism Thematic Office on Innovation for Africa in Rabat on April 23, 2026.
This facility, the first of its kind on the continent, was opened by Morocco’s Minister of Tourism, Fatim-Zahra Ammor, alongside the Secretary-General of UN Tourism, Shaikha Al Nowais. The office is specifically designed to support the UN Tourism’s Agenda 2030 for Africa, leveraging the tourism sector as a primary engine for socio-economic growth. Its operations will focus on capacity-building programs, dedicated innovation forums, and initiatives that support entrepreneurship and digital transformation across the African continent.
The Secretary-General described the opening as a major achievement for the sector, noting that the office serves as an action-oriented platform rather than just an institutional framework. It is intended to accelerate the growth of startups and equip the African workforce with the skills necessary for a digital-first tourism economy. This move comes at a strategic time for Morocco, which is currently aiming to attract 20 million international visitors annually. By acting as a hub for talent and cross-border partnerships, the office seeks to reshape the future of the industry through a focus on sustainable and competitive practices.
Minister Ammor highlighted that the office aligns with the national vision for South-South cooperation, reinforcing Morocco’s status as a pioneer and a reliable partner for international organizations. The legal and operational foundation for this new hub was established through high-level agreements signed in Marrakech and Segovia throughout 2025, ensuring a robust administrative and financial framework. Ultimately, the Rabat office aims to foster an environment where innovation leads to job creation for young people and a more resilient tourism landscape for all African nations.
