Ethiopia’s National Election Board (NEBE) Friday announced that more than 50 million citizens have registered to vote in the country’s upcoming national election scheduled to take place on June 1, 2026.
Briefing the media, NEBE chairperson Melatwork Hailu said that a total of 50,514,155 citizens have been registered to cast their ballots during the upcoming 7th national election.
The voter registration exercise, which began on 7 March, formally concluded on April 22, 2026. The process was conducted through a hybrid system, combining digital and in-person approaches.
According to the chairperson, more than 5.5 million voters were registered through the digital platform, while the majority completed their registration through in-person procedures.
Hailu also said that the board had finalised candidate registration earlier, conducted from January 9 to February 8, 2026, as part of its broader preparations for the election.
The NEBE described the overall process as successfully executed, underscoring a major milestone in the lead-up to Ethiopia’s seventh general election.
According to data obtained from the board, women constitute 23,123,426 (46 percent) while men make up 27,390,729 (54 percent) of the total voters registered for the general election scheduled to be held on June 1, 2026.
Election preparations are underway nationwide, with 195,316 personnel deployed.
About 70,000 election workers have so far been paid a combined one billion birr, officials said.
