President-Elect Peter Mutharika will be sworn in on Saturday at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre, officially becoming Malawi’s seventh head of state following his decisive win in the 16 September general elections.
Mutharika secured 56.8 percent of the vote, defeating incumbent President Lazarus Chakwera in a contest widely viewed as a referendum on economic management and governance.
His running mate, Jane Ansah, will also take the oath of office as Vice President.
The Ministry of Information and Digitalisation confirmed on Tuesday that invitations have been extended to regional and international dignitaries, including heads of state from other African Union member states.
The swearing-in ceremony is expected to draw thousands of supporters and signal the beginning of a new chapter in Malawi’s political landscape.
To ensure nationwide participation, the government has arranged public viewing points at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe, Katoto Freedom Park in Mzuzu and Mangochi Stadium.
Mutharika previously served as Malawi’s president from 2014 to 2020, during which he championed infrastructure development and regional integration.
His return to office marks a political comeback after losing to Chakwera in a 2020 re-run election.
Local media report that former Presidents Bakili Muluzi and Joyce Banda are expected to attend the inauguration.
