Africa’s leading carrier Ethiopian Airlines launched its new passenger flight service to Sharjah, United Arab Emirates (UAE), as of Sunday.
Speaking at the launching event, Retta Melaku, Chief Operating Officer of the Ethiopian Airlines, said the new route will operate four times weekly, connecting passengers to one of the UAE’s vibrant cities, known for its rich culture and economic opportunities.
He said the new service complements the company’s existing cargo operations and strengthens its connectivity to the Middle East, providing more opportunities to explore the UAE’s rich cultural heritage and dynamic business landscape.
Noting that the airline operates over 120 weekly passenger and cargo flights to about 13 destinations in the region, Melaku said the new route is designed to offer seamless global connectivity to and from Sharjah, further complementing the airline’s cargo services.
He said the new service will be operated by the state-of-the-art Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, to ensure a comfortable and efficient travel experience.
The airline’s presence in the region dates back to 1979 when it launched flights to Dubai, marking nearly five decades of service to the UAE.
According to the operating officer, the new service to Sharjah will play a pivotal role in facilitating trade, tourism, and cultural exchange between the two regions and beyond.
Melaku further announced that the airline is preparing to resume flights to Abu Dhabi, another UAE’s vibrant city, in July this year after over ten year suspension.
