The Super Falcons of Nigeria on Saturday in Rabat, Morocco recorded a dramatic 3-2 victory over the Atlas Lionesses of Morocco after trailing 0-2 in the first half of the final of the 2024 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The Atlas Lionesses took the lead in the 12th minute of the match through Ghizlane Chebbak, while the second goal for the Moroccans was scored by Sanaâ Mssoudy in the 24th minute.
The first half ended 2-0 in favour of the Atlas Lionesses of Morocco.
The Super Falcons raised their game in the second half and their efforts were rewarded when Esther Okoronkwo converted the penalty awarded to the team.
The second goal for the Super Falcons came in the 71st minute of the game when Folasade Ijamilusi tapped in the ball from a beautiful cross from Okoronkwo for the equalizer, while the third goal for the Super Falcons was scored by Jennifer Echegini in the 88th minute to bring the score line to 3-2.
This victory of the Super Falcons over their Morocco counterparts in the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations brings their trophies in WAFCON to 10.
The Black Queens of Ghana finished third in the tournament after defeating the defending the champions, Banyana Banyana of South Africa through penalties on Friday.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu has assured the Super Falcons of a befitting celebration upon their return from Morocco.
Tinubu, who shared in the celebrations of the Super Falcons during a video call with them and their officials on Saturday after the match.
“You will be celebrated, and I congratulate all the coaches and the management of the team, including the ministers and officials.
“To set the record of victories for the 10th time is not a small feat for the country and the continent as a whole. Safe journey back home, enjoy yourselves and avoid injuries,” Tinubu said.
When Captain Rasheedat Ajibade also appreciated President Tinubu for approving the payment of their bonuses and promised to present the trophy in Abuja, Tinubu also responded, “Good, I am looking forward to that.”
Earlier, President Tinubu, had in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, described the team’s performance as a testament to the resilience and fighting spirit of Nigerians.
“The Super Falcons’ spectacular performance tonight in Rabat, coming from behind to beat a spirited Moroccan side playing in front of a passionate home crowd, exemplifies the determination that defines the Nigerian spirit.
“With hard work, dedication, and tenacity, you have achieved the mission the nation dreamed of and prayed for. The nation looks forward to welcoming our champions. Congratulations! Nigeria celebrates you,” the statement added.
The Super Falcons had won the previous editions staged in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2016 and 2018.
