The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) say it is convening an extraordinary meeting at its Jeddah headquarters to examine the aftermath of Israeli recognition of the self-declared Republic of Somaliland as an independent state.
The enclave which declaed independence in 1991 is internationally regarded as part of Somalia, a member of the OIC whose other members have condemned Israel and warned that its move could destabilise the Horn of Africa region.
A statement attributable to OIC Secretary-General Hissein Brahim Taha said Somalia’s territorial indivisiblity, sovereignty, and integrity will not be subject to a compromise or concession.
He said Somalia is facing complex challenges to its security, stability, and sovereignty and called on the OIC collective to close ranks and support and defend the Somali federal government.
The OIC assured Somalia of the bloc’s unwavering support in its quest to preserve its territorial integrity in the face of a move by Israel which sought to undermine this.
The organisation reiterated its categorical rejection of ”any attempts to impose a new political reality that could undermine regional stability and threaten security in the Horn of Africa”.
