The Seychelles’ presidential election will proceed to a runoff after no candidate secured an absolute majority in the first round.
The campaign for the second round has now officially begun.
The Electoral Commission confirmed that the presidential runoff will take place across three days: October 9, 10, and 11.
The race will be contested between the two leading candidates: Patrick Herminie of the United Seychelles (US) party and incumbent President Wavel Ramkalawan of Linyon Demokratik Seselwa (LDS). Herminie narrowly led the first round with of the vote ( ballots), closely followed by Ramkalawan, who garnered ( votes). The remaining six candidates received marginal support.
This second-round contest pits the country’s two main political forces directly against each other. The elections are taking place as the Seychelles continues its post-COVID economic recovery and debates how to diversify its economy beyond its traditional reliance on tourism and fisheries.
