US President Donald Trump has threatened to sue South African comedian Trevor Noah after a joke made during Noah’s hosting of the Grammy Awards drew an angry response from the White House incumbent.
While presenting the Song of the Year category, Noah quipped that artists coveted the award “almost as much as Trump wants Greenland, which makes sense because Epstein’s island is gone, [and now] he needs a new one to hang out with Bill Clinton.”
The remark referenced long‑running public scrutiny over Trump’s past association with the late financier Jeffrey Epstein.
Trump reacted within hours, posting on his Truth Social platform that he would be “sending my lawyers to sue,” accusing Noah of making a “false and defamatory statement.”
He insisted he had “never been to Epstein Island, nor anywhere close,” adding that he had never been accused of visiting the property “not even by the Fake News Media.”
He ended his post with a warning: “Get ready Noah, I’m going to have some fun with you!”
Epstein, a wealthy financier with high‑profile political and business connections, was arrested in 2019 on federal sex‑trafficking charges.
He died in a New York jail cell later that year while awaiting trial.
His private island, Little St James in the US Virgin Islands, was purchased in 1998 and has been repeatedly cited in survivor accounts alleging trafficking and abuse.
Epstein had previously been convicted in 2008 for soliciting prostitution from a minor.
The US Justice Department has said allegations linking Trump to Epstein’s crimes are unfounded and no survivor has accused him of wrongdoing.
