Tunisia on Monday hosted a meeting of the Tunisia–Algeria–Egypt tripartite consultation mechanism on Libya, with the participation of the head of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).
It is part of efforts to strengthen regional coordination in support of a political settlement.
The meeting brought together Tunisia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Tunisians Abroad, Mohamed Ali Nafti; Algeria’s Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, the National Community Abroad and African Affairs, Ahmed Attaf; and Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Egyptian Expatriates’ Affairs, Badr Abdel Ati.
It is taking place in the presence of the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Libya and head of UNSMIL, Hanna Tetteh, according to an official announcement by the Tunisian authorities.
The gathering reflects the shared determination of the leaders of the three neighbouring countries to step up consultation and joint coordination, with the aim of contributing to progress towards a comprehensive and lasting resolution of the Libyan crisis.
The tripartite mechanism seeks to align diplomatic positions and support international efforts in favour of a Libyan-led political solution.
Discussions are focussing on reviewing initiatives undertaken by Tunisia, Algeria and Egypt, in coordination with the United Nations, to support the intra-Libyan dialogue process.
Participants will also examine ways to promote a consensual and inclusive political solution that safeguards Libya’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence.
According to a statement, the meeting will also address regional security and stability challenges amid persistent political and institutional divisions in Libya.
Through this consultation framework, the three countries aim to help create conditions conducive to stabilising the country and strengthening security across the wider region.
The talks are also expected to underscore the need to respond to the aspirations of the Libyan people for security, stability and development, in line with international resolutions and UN-led mediation efforts.
