The United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) celebrated cooperation with Morocco in counter-terrorism training and capacity-building in Africa on Monday in Rabat, marking the fifth anniversary of the opening of its regional office.
In a statement issued on this occasion, UNOCT stated that this celebration “illustrates the continued cooperation between the Organisation and Morocco to enhance regional security and counter-terrorism capacities on the African continent.”
Opened on October 6, 2020, the Programme Office in Rabat has trained, in consultation with Moroccan authorities, more than 1,000 officials from 34 African countries, as part of specialised programs focused on
prevention, operational coordination, and the exchange of experiences.
Since its creation, the Rabat Office has established itself as a key player in regional cooperation, particularly through the “Marrakech Platform,” which brings together the heads of African counterterrorism agencies each year.
The four meetings held so far have helped strengthen inter-state dialogue and define common approaches to the
rise of transnational threats, particularly in the Sahel and the Horn of Africa.
The office also strives to deepen coordination with United Nations entities and partner institutions to ensure the coherence of international efforts and the sustainability of results. Its programs are part of the implementation of the United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy, in compliance with international law and UN Security Council resolutions.
From Rabat, the UNOCT develops technical training for African security forces and intelligence services, consolidating Morocco’s role as a key UN partner in preventing and combating terrorism in Africa.
