The UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy met with President Félix Tshisekedi to advocate for strengthened cooperation between African stakeholders and international partners, with the aim of ending the persistent security crisis in eastern DR Congo.
Kinshasa – President Félix Tshisekedi on Wednesday received the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy, Huang Xia, to review the progress of peace initiatives in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Huang Xia underscored the need to fulfil commitments dating back to the 1990s in order to achieve lasting peace. “It is a frank, sincere and serious implementation of all these commitments that will finally allow us to reach comprehensive and inclusive peace,” he said.
The Special Envoy reviewed the various ongoing peace processes, particularly since the resurgence of the M23 rebellion in November 2021. He stressed the importance of enhanced coordination between African actors and international partners, including the United States and Qatar.
He also reiterated the UN’s continued engagement alongside countries in the region to resolve the crisis, while commending President Tshisekedi for successfully hosting the 9th Summit of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) in Kinshasa.
The shared objective of the United Nations and regional partners remains to accelerate the resolution of the conflict in eastern DRC by consolidating existing peace efforts and strengthening international cooperation.
