Egypt has launched a diplomatic mediation between the United States and Iran to contain military escalation in the region, calling for political solutions and a resumption of dialogue, according to an official statement.
Egypt’s Foreign Minister, Badr Abdelatty, on Wednesday, undertook mediation efforts between Washington and Tehran, holding separate talks with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, and with the US Special Envoy for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff. The aim is to ease regional tensions, the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.
During the phone conversations, the Egyptian minister stressed the need to intensify diplomatic efforts to prevent the region from sliding into new cycles of instability. He called for the “creation of a climate conducive to diplomatic solutions and the establishment of lasting political settlements,” underscoring the importance of maintaining dialogue channels open between the parties concerned.
According to the statement, Abdelatty said it is “essential to prepare the necessary conditions for the resumption of dialogue between the United States and Iran,” noting that the objective of the mediation is to reach a comprehensive agreement on Iran’s nuclear programme that takes into account the interests of all parties and contributes to strengthening international stability.
This initiative is in line with Cairo’s traditional role as a mediator in regional crises. Last September, Egypt had already facilitated an agreement between Tehran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), enabling the resumption of UN inspections of Iran’s nuclear programme.
For Egypt, regional stability also carries major economic implications, particularly in terms of maritime security and the smooth flow of international trade, the statement recalled, highlighting the direct impact of geopolitical tensions on trade and strategic shipping routes.
The mediation comes amid heightened tensions marked by a reinforcement of the US military posture in the Gulf. The US Central Command has announced the deployment of the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group to “enhance regional security,” while Washington has also increased its air presence with F-15 and F-35 fighter jets, maintaining pressure on Tehran.
