The U.S. Embassy in Addis Ababa has announced that the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) will continue its programs in Ethiopia under a new structure.
The embassy in a statement on Tuesday said the programs, which include USAID’s regional operations, will focus on humanitarian aid, health, and food security.
The programs will be conducted under a new bilateral assistance agreement reached between the U.S. States department and the government of Ethiopia.
The embassy explained that this realignment, enacted under President Trump and Secretary Rubio, aims to better serve U.S. national interests through foreign assistance.
“This transition was designed to reduce duplication, strengthen accountability, and better align assistance programs with U.S. foreign policy and national security objectives,” the statement read.
According to the statement, USAID’s regional operations will also transition to corresponding State Department bureaus, ensuring a continued focus on regionally responsive aid delivery.
The move, as stated in the statement, is part of a broader initiative to streamline the worldwide delivery of life-saving assistance.
The U.S. Ambassador to Ethiopia Ervin Massinga earlier signaled that that the majority of U.S. assistance on healthcare, agriculture, and for internally displaced persons (IDPs) would be resumed.
