Zimbabwe’s ambassador to Mozambique and Eswatini, Victor Matemadanda died on Sunday at the age of 66, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced. The cause of death was not disclosed.
In a statement, the ministry said it “mourns the passing” of the envoy and extended condolences to the Matemadanda family and the nation.
Matemadanda had served as Zimbabwe’s ambassador to Maputo and Mbabane since March 2021.
A former ZANU PF national political commissar and ex‑deputy minister of defence and war veterans’ affairs, Matemadanda was a prominent figure in Zimbabwe’s liberation‑war veterans’ movement.
Born in 1960, he joined Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle in 1973.
After independence, he later became secretary‑general of the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association, playing a key role in the veterans’ confrontation with former president Robert Mugabe in the years leading to the 2017 military‑assisted transition.
