The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) announced on Tuesday that goalkeeper Edouard Mendy will be unavailable for the Teranga Lions’ next match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, following an injury to his left knee.
Senegal will have to cope without their starting goalkeeper for their next outing in the tournament. In a statement released on Tuesday, June 23, the FSF indicated that Edouard Mendy has been ruled out of the national team’s upcoming fixture, having sustained the injury during the intense group stage match against Norway on June 22.
Following initial medical examinations conducted by the national team’s medical staff, the player was officially declared unavailable for the upcoming fixture. The federation added that the goalkeeper will receive appropriate treatment and undergo further medical tests to assess the exact severity of the injury. These subsequent examinations will also help determine the remainder of his participation in the tournament, according to the same official source.
This major setback comes just ahead of Senegal’s final match in Group I. Having injured his left knee against Norway, Edouard Mendy was forced to leave his teammates mid-game. The head coach must now select a replacement for the upcoming crucial fixture, with Mory Diaw and Yehvann Diouf among the available options on the bench. Following two consecutive defeats in Group I—losing 3-1 to France on June 16 and 3-2 to Norway on June 22—the Teranga Lions will play their final group stage match against Iraq, aiming to secure a vital win to keep their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign alive.
