At the 39th African Union (AU) Summit held in Addis Ababa from February 12 to 14, 2026, Gabon was lauded for its inclusive and peaceful transition back to constitutional order.
The “Gabon Model” was a focal point during high-level deliberations, particularly during a joint session between the AU Peace and Security Council (PSC) and the United Nations Security Council. Delegates presented the Gabonese experience as a successful example of how a military-led regime change can pivot toward civilian governance through structured dialogue and transparent electoral processes.
The summit officially marked Gabon’s full reintegration into the continental body, ending the suspension imposed following the regime change in 2023. In a symbolic gesture of the AU’s approval, the newly elected President, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, was invited to be the first head of state to address the assembly. President Nguema reaffirmed Gabon’s commitment to regional stability and outlined the nation’s future priorities within the Peace and Security Council, focusing specifically on conflict prevention and the management of political crises across Africa.
The “Gabon Model” sparked significant interest among other member states, with several delegations approaching the Gabonese Permanent Representative, Lilly Stella Ngyema Ndong, to request formal experience-sharing sessions. This diplomatic interest highlights a growing continental appetite for proven mechanisms that facilitate peaceful exits from transitional periods. The AU’s endorsement is rooted in the success of the monitoring and observation mechanism that overseen the transition, ensuring it remained inclusive of various political and civil society actors.
By meeting the AU’s conditions for the restoration of constitutional order, Gabon has successfully transitioned from a state under sanction to a recognized leader in crisis resolution. The successful holding of the presidential election was the final milestone required for the AU to lift all remaining restrictions. As Gabon resumes its seat, it does so with a mandate to contribute its unique perspective on democratic restoration to other nations currently undergoing similar political transformations.
