The Chairperson of the African Union Commission Mahmoud Ali Youssouf over the weekend congratulated the Kingdom of Morocco on winning the African Nations Championship in Nairobi, hailing it as “a proud moment for Morocco and for African football.”
Youssouf praised the tournament for showcasing Africa’s unity and talent, and applauded all participating teams for their passion and resilience. He also commended Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda for their joint hosting, calling it a model of regional partnership.
The chairperson paid tribute to Sudan for reaching the semi-finals despite the country’s challenges, describing the team’s performance as “a beacon of hope.”
Reaffirming the AU’s support, the Chairperson said sport is an important part of culture and diplomacy, and remains a powerful driver of peace, unity, and international cooperation.
Morocco have been crowned 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) champions after beating Madagascar 3-2 in the final in Nairobi, Kenya.
Félicité Manouhantzua put Madagascar ahead in the ninth minute with a long-range strike past goalkeeper Mehdi Al Harrar.
Youssef Mehri equalized for Morocco in the 27th minute with a header from a Khalid Baba cross, before Oussama Lamlioui made it 2-1 just before half-time, converting Mohamed Boulacsout’s delivery.
Toky Rakotondribe brought Madagascar level again in the 68th minute, but Lamlioui – the tournament’s top scorer with six goals – struck a superb long-range winner ten minutes from time.
