The government of Benin announced on Wednesday the appointment of acclaimed American filmmaker Shelton Jackson “Spike” Lee and his wife, producer, author, and civil rights activist Tonya Lewis Lee, as Thematic Ambassadors to the African-American Diaspora in the United States.
In an official statement, Beninese authorities warmly welcomed the commitment of the renowned couple, expressing honor at their appointment.
This strategic move is a key component of President Patrice Talon’s broader initiative to strengthen cultural and historical ties between Benin and descendants of the African Diaspora. The Lees’ mandate will involve promoting reconnection with African roots by fostering intergenerational dialogue and supporting initiatives focused on collective memory. This effort coincides with the launch of the digital platform, which offers Diaspora descendants the opportunity to acquire Beninese nationality.
