The Burkinabe Ministry of Health temporarily authorises university hospital doctors and teachers to
continue their work in the private sector.
The Burkinabe Ministry of Health announced in a press release on Monday an exceptional and transitional authorisation allowing doctors to continue their work in private healthcare facilities.
This decision comes after the expiration, at the end of September 2025, of the authorisations for these professionals to work in the private sector, in accordance with the decree of August 17, 2023,
which regulates the activity of public healthcare workers in private facilities.
The measure concerns specialists, pharmacists, and dental surgeons, as well as university hospital teachers.
According to a press release from the Minister of Health, Dr. Robert Lucien Kargougou, this measure aims to preserve equitable access to specialised care for the population and to support the private
healthcare sub-sector in its complementary role to public facilities.
It will remain in effect until private facilities have a sufficient number of specialists on their staff. The ministry specifies that the shifts must take place under the same conditions and obligations set
by the 2023 decree.
It announces that a monitoring system will be put in place to ensure strict compliance with these provisions. Private institutions that fail to comply with the legal framework are subject to sanctions in accordance with current regulations.
The ministry reminds all stakeholders (universities, public and private institutions, as well as healthcare personnel) of the importance of scrupulously observing these guidelines.
In August 2023, the Burkinabe government issued a decree establishing the conditions for public healthcare workers to work in private healthcare facilities.
The decree states that the shift period for general practitioners and paramedical staff would end at the end of September 2024.
As for university hospital teachers in medicine, pharmacy, and dental surgery, as well as specialist physicians, pharmacists, and dental surgeons, their authorisations to work would expire at the end of September 2025.
