Burkina Faso has reached a major milestone in its national drive toward universal health coverage.
The National Universal Health Insurance Fund (CNAMU) announced on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, that 388,803 individuals have been successfully registered under the pilot phase of the Universal Health Insurance Scheme (RAMU), which is currently deployed across the strategic Kadiogo and Guiriko regions.
The implementation progress report, presented during a review workshop in Ouagadougou, details a steady, gradual ramp-up of the country’s public healthcare infrastructure. According to CNAMU officials, the system has successfully affiliated 431 healthcare structures, split almost equally between 215 public and 216 private institutions. To ensure widespread access to medical care, the fund has contracted a total of 3,102 healthcare providers, including 2,504 public health facilities, 290 private facilities, 290 pharmacies, and 13 specialized laboratories.
The demographics of the initial 389,000 enrollees reflect a diverse cross-section of Burkinabè society. The registry currently accounts for 119,639 state civil servants, 18,934 salaried corporate workers, 417 self-employed individuals within the formal economy, and 4,192 workers operating in the informal sector. Furthermore, the safety net expands to protect vulnerable populations, covering 14,171 retirees alongside more than 231,000 dependent family members who rely on primary policyholders for healthcare access.
Since medical services officially went live on February 1, 2026, more than 31,000 civil servants and roughly 50,000 of their immediate family members have already received medical care financed by the RAMU. Financially, the program is sustained by a growing tax base, with 31,496 active civil servants currently paying steady premiums into the system within the two pilot zones. Following the initial success of this regional deployment, CNAMU management intends to progressively scale up and extend full insurance benefits to retirees and the broader informal sector nationwide.
